Description
The Märket lighthouse, the westernmost building in Finland

The 2009/I coinage includes the 2009 euro coin set of Finland. The set also includes the Märket mint medal designed by artist Hannu Veijalainen.

In the middle of the Åland Sea, divided by the border between Finland and Sweden, lies the small and low islet of Märket. The rocky islet was a threat to shipping, and a lighthouse was built there of chunky stones and brick in 1885. Lighthouse keepers lived on the barren islet till 1976, after which the lighthouse was automated.
